Stephen Powell Broadcasting

Philadelphia soul station WDAS-FM (DAS) taught me practically everything I know about music and media says inspirational broadcaster Stephen Powell.  Man, I would rush home from high school every single day and until bed-time, I would literally study every nuance of the Philly radio superstars; Dr. Perry Johnson, Mimi Brown and Doug Henderson; Powell fondly reminisces.  The station inspired him so much; he even created his own makeshift radio station in his living room, putting together an old stereo with an 8 track, a turntable and cassette player and would jam the music back to back and mimic the styling's of his DJ professors.

Destiny manifested when a popular R&B/funk Disc Jockey, Dr. Harry Drew pilgrimaged to the rural town of Vineland, New Jersey and bought air-time on a local pop station.   Powell rang Drew and informed him he was interested in learning his skills.  Without hesitation, the good Doctor invited him to the studio, trained him for a couple days and granted him a half an hour (1/2) set on the air.  “I couldn’t explain the exhilarating feeling” says Powell, after I signed off the air that was the defining moment when I realized that yeah, broadcasting is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.  Stephen began rapping and later formed the DJ Squad MC Control; winning all local rap and DJ contests.

After committing his life to Christ; he began pursuing Christian broadcasting and hooked up with Gospel Announcer Charles Bogan; their popularity spread tremendously, opening opportunities to host large venue concerts, live remotes, fashion shows, church events and further landed Powell a number of on-air gigs for radio stations serving the South Jersey, Philadelphia and Delaware areas.

Stephen hit the New York airwaves as Station Voice Announcer for NY smooth jazz station CD 101.9 FM for approximately a year and a half (1 ˝) in which the station was Arbitron rated #1 for smooth jazz.

Currently he is the producer and host of Inspirational Vybes, a positive-spirited music video show which spotlights urban Gospel with a prismatic mix of inspiring mainstream hip-hop, R&B, reggae and jazz inspirations.  Beaming from Brooklyn, iVybes airs 247on urban content websites www.illbrew.com
